Thank you. As a kid in a lower socio-economic neighbourhood in Australia, and attending low-funded public schools, I saw first-hand how a lack of tech resources can put students at a disadvantage. That experience ignited my passion for using technology to bridge educational divides.  My journey – spanning Australia, Asia, and Central America, as well as varied roles in education, IT, and business – has shaped my belief that for AI to be truly transformative in education, it must be designed with inclusivity and ethics at its core.
Take my time in Darwin, facing some of Australia’s lowest digital literacy rates. Rather than seeing technology as a replacement for teachers, I used project-based learning to transform their perspective – technology became a powerful tool in their hands. This human-centred approach is essential when integrating AI as well.
Here’s how my experiences align with the mission of promoting ethical and responsible AI use in education:
-Prioritising Human-Centered Design: Teachers must be integral in designing and implementing AI. Their insights ensure it complements existing methods and addresses students’ diverse needs. Project-based learning allows for this collaborative leadership.
-Mitigating Bias: Algorithms need constant monitoring to identify and root out biases. AI must work for all students, regardless of background. My cross-cultural work highlights the importance of this vigilance.
-Cultivating Transparency: Openness about how AI is used builds trust with students, teachers, and parents.

Empowering Educators: I collaborate with teacher associations such as ED3 DAO to create informative AI-enhanced curriculum development workshops. We don’t just focus on the ‘how’ of AI, but the ‘why’. We discuss potential benefits alongside ethical dilemmas, like algorithmic bias.  For example, we might explore different AI-powered essay grading tools while critically analysing how they might impact diverse student writing styles.
Engaging Parents:  I want to demystify AI for parents. Through easily digestible blog posts and PTA presentations, I explain how tools like AI-enhanced learning plans, and Large Language Model approaches can assist in personalising learning. I also emphasise the importance of transparency – parents should know how AI is used in the classroom and how their child’s data is protected.
Advising Policymakers: I advocate for proactive policies that protect students while fostering innovation. I provide input on legislation that addresses data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and ensuring AI tools don’t perpetuate existing inequities. My goal is to help create a framework where AI benefits all students fairly.

-Fairness for Everyone: AI tools should work just as well for every student, no matter their background or what they look like. We need to be super careful to make sure AI doesn’t accidentally leave anyone behind.
-No More Secrets: Everyone should understand how the AI helper works! What information does it use? How does it make its suggestions? Knowing this builds trust and helps us use the AI even better.
-Keeping Information Safe: Your schoolwork and learning information are private. We need super strong rules and safety systems to make sure AI never share and personal information about what students are writing about without permission.
-Teachers are Still the Best: AI is a helper, like a smart calculator! Teachers are still the ones who know you best and guide your learning journey. AI can’t replace that special connection.
-A Chance to Fix Mistakes: Even smart technology makes mistakes sometimes. We need to be able to spot these errors and teach the AI to do better, just like we learn from our own mistakes.
Let’s Keep Improving!: We need to constantly check if AI is truly helpful in classrooms. Getting feedback from students, teachers, thought leaders and notable researchers help us improve the AI tools over time.

AI can be incredible for learning! Imagine getting help tailored just for you or having the AI find patterns to show where you need a bit more practice. But, if we don’t build AI with these guidelines in mind, it could be unfair, confusing, or even unsafe. -Avoid “AI for AI’s sake.” Clearly articulate the specific educational objectives AI will address. Is it personalised learning, automated feedback, adaptive assessments, or something else?
