Regulate, But How? : The Future of Artificial Intelligence

The European Commission’s push for an EU-wide regulatory framework on artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining momentum. In April 2021, they introduced the groundbreaking draft AI Act, marking the first step towards a comprehensive regulation of AI. This innovative legal framework places a strong emphasis on the specific utilization of AI systems and the inherent risks they pose.

In June 2023, Parliament cast its vote on the matter. Presently, EU lawmakers are embarking on negotiations to refine the upcoming legislation. These deliberations encompass significant revisions to the Commission’s initial proposal, involving modifications to the AI system definition, expansion of the prohibited AI system categories, and the introduction of obligations concerning general-purpose AI as well as generative AI models like ChatGPT.
